Happy Trails
Writer
Writing is: narrating, to me. Whether it is a poem, a song, a book, a movie, a joke, a commercial, your memoir… You are telling a story: through images, words, music.
All of us have received that gift: to share our stories with each other. And to allow them to come to life, we need one another. Writer and reader. Narrator and listener. Performer and audience…
We need each other in this co-creative process. Without others, no story is ever finished, really. Does it even exist, if nobody knows about it? Like that famous Zen koan teaches: “If a tree falls in a forest and no one is around to hear it, does it make a sound?”
The same goes for writing and storytelling, I feel: those stories are connecting us with one another. With our neighbours, our communities and the world around us… And also in time: with those who have come before us and “on whose shoulders we now are standing”, as well as with them who will come after us. So simple. And so vital.
Whether it happens over the phone, around a campfire, through a greeting card or a film that moves you: we are all human beings. And by exchanging our stories, we can keep on growing and enriching ourselves and one another, again and again. What a miracle, don’t you think, and what a joy…! That this, too, is part of being human and being alive?
And as far as I am concerned, yes: I want to write and keep telling stories happily ever after.
Happy Trails to You!
Poems
ABUNDANCE (H. Van Nylen)
Focus less on
What you miss and
More on what
Already is.
A CUP OF SUN (H. Van Nylen)
My coffee and me,
Under the hazelnut tree,
Sipping on the sun.
LOVE IS LOVE (H. Van Nylen)
My truth
Is not more
True than
Yours
Their love
Is not more
Loving than
Ours
We are
Not more
Important than
Them
We just long
To be loved
All of us
Now and then
“Hildegard has a pleasant lightness of language, creates inspiring images and throughout her work as a writer, you can feel her great musicality. Her deeply felt certainty that everything is all right, she can transmit to you disarmingly. From her pen many lovely sentences keep flowing, and that it has nothing to do with floating angels, for example this refrain sentence of hers is an example: ‘Later, when I will die, I will turn into dirt again.’ May that ‘later’ take a very long time, so we may keep enjoying her exceptional talent.”
